President Goodluck Jonathan expresses concern over the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the country

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Abuja expressed concern over the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the country. He described it as a “threat to sustainable development.” He therefore called for public-private partnership for increased domestic funding for the fight against the disease.Also speaking, the Director General of National Agency for the Control of AIDS, Prof. John Idoko, stated that, “Government funding of the HIV response had increased over time from 4.7 per cent of the total expenditure in 2007 to 25.2 per cent in 2010.” He added that, “Government expenditure on treatment dropped to 20.1 per cent in 2010 compared to the 74.1 per cent spent on treatment by the government in 2007. Approximately, 215,000 died from HIV/AIDS in 2010.”
